Then, repair the drives using Disk Utility. I also wanted to ask, what format are the LaCie drives?įirstly, I would ensure you have a backup of all the data on the drives.

I see that you tested it with 2 separated LaCie drives, do they both have their own power supply or were they tested using the same one? Thank you for outlining the troubleshooting steps you have taken.

#Putting lacie backup on mac windows
I appreciate if you can help, although I fear that the solution will need to go thru Apple, which scares me.Īs final rant, I regret saying that after 12 year of enjoying my iMac, Catalina destroyed my enthusiasm for Apple and I'm seriously considering to move back to Windows when time of change comes. Since LaCie used to work fine until 2 days ago (and it's likely not broken based on above evidence) and since the issue manifests in combination of 10.15.5 together with LaCie (but not with Seagate), my conclusion is that the root cause is with how 10.15.5 deals with certain aspects of the LaCie hardware/firmware. I turned it on and same thing happened: both LaCie disks unmounted, and the Seagate stayed.ġ) it's not likely to be a LaCie HD failure because both HD are experiencing the same issue just since 2 days: very unlikely that their hardware failed at the same time, even more considering that the second HD is always offĢ) it's not likely to be a port failure as upon swapping ports, it was still the LaCie to ejectģ) the concomitance of this problem with the 10.15.5 update highly suggests that the problem is with Catalina in combination with LaCie hardware/firmwareĤ) from the observed symptoms, I suspect that it has to do with the disk stopping spinning. I also have a second LaCie (exact same model) which I sporadically mirror to the first one. I tried swapping ports but still the same happened: the LaCie unmounted, the Seagate stayed. I also have a Seagate (this one powered thru USB port) and it does not disconnect. I tried to use an external utility "keep drive spinning".

I tried to use energy saving option an unchecked the box to put HDs to sleep when possible. As a matter of fact, I'm almost sure that while I was typing, the HD was not spinning any more at a certain point and now that it unmounted, I hear it spinning again. As a matter of fact, I just discovered now as I'm writing this using the same iMac, that the HD disconnected without even the iMac being asleep (of course).

After the iMac resumes from sleeps the HD icon is still there on the desktop but after a few seconds it disappears, the message of driver unmounted improperly pops up while the HD keeps on spinning unmounted. This happens after the iMac (quad core, i5, 2017) resumes from sleep. My external HD (connected to USB port, external power supply) ejects itself. 4) the issue reappeared with exceptional and previously unexperienced regularity. 2?) After the last update to 10.15.5 (from. Then disappeared in later iterations (.1 or. The issue used to happen at 10.15.0 but not in such severe form.
